ARRIVING IN STYLE - PROM 2016

Prom is all about style, the dress, the tux, the hair, the shoes, the dance moves, they all play an important role in your prom night. 

What about arriving in style? Some will argue that there is no point in renting any type of transportation because no one will see you arrive. But we all know it's about the ride, not who notices. Having a luxurious ride for prom is one of the most fun aspects before actually getting to the prom. It makes the night feel that much more special. So don't listen to the naysayer, and enjoy the ride. 

The limousine is your typical go-to choice, and for good reasons.  It emanates style and class, if you see someone arrive in a limo you automatically think "classy." And as a bonus, it can hold several people, which can make the ride more fun because you share it with your friends.

No disrespect to the limousine, but maybe your style is a bit different. Remember, this is about the ride, and what you and your friends will enjoy the most. So, lets look at some other ways for you to arrive to your prom in a style that suits you best. 

 

If you are looking for other ways for you and your friends to ride together, there are several large group options.

The Party Bus

 

Comfortable seating, flashing lights, a mini dance floor and blaring music. The party bus will allow you to dance all the way too prom and all the way to the after party. Talk about dancing the night away!

 

School Bus

Dancing even during intermission not your thing, but you still want to enjoy the ride with 20 of your closest friends? What about an out of commission school bus, decorated to the hilt for your prom? The best part, you can really customize the decorations to match your style!

Hay Ride

Want to enjoy the evening air as you head to prom? A convertible may not be your best choice, especially if you need to keep you or your dates hair from messing up. Plus, you can only fit four people at most into a convertible. A hay ride lets you enjoy the great outdoors with as many of your closest friends you can pile into a trailer full of hay! 

 

If you aren't going to prom in a group, that's ok! There are some great options for just two!

A Luxury Car

Always wanted to ride in a Bentley or Maybach, then this is the style for you. You can even go retro and rent a classic luxury car. It is definitely a once in a lifetime experience.

Horse and Carriage

What better way to make your date feel like a princess than to take her to prom in a horse drawn carriage. This gives you the benefits of enjoying the night air and making the night just like a fairytale! Be sure to have your date home before curfew otherwise you may be walking home with a pumpkin, a dog, and some mice, instead of your carriage. 

Pickup Truck

Rocking cowboy boots with your dress or tux? Even if you aren't this may be the transportation style just for you. A dependable pickup truck. The best part, you probably already have one or know someone who does, so it makes it easy to secure the transportation you want.

Prom season is interesting…Some students wait their entire life to rent and enjoy limousine service, whereas others simply want a way to get there and another group looks for the most interesting way to reach the event. Check out these great ideas for transportation to the main event.
 
 
Super Stretch Limousines: By far, stretch and super stretch limousines are the most common form of prom transportation. Ranging from 6-8 passenger models, these vehicles are popular with area students. Look for package rates and know that most area limo companies will have a 6 hour minimum on rentals during peak season.
 
Executive Shuttle Network
 
 
Party Buses: Looking for a way to transport more than 8 passengers in one vehicle? Consider a party bus! These bigger vehicles are basically limo buses. On the small end of the scale are 14 passenger models and they go up in size. Hourly minimums are longer, supply is extremely limited so you’ll want to book early (which can be hard when you’re trying to nail down a group of passengers).
 
 
Executive Shuttle Network
 
Your Own Car: Some students do opt to drive themselves to prom. Pros? You can leave whenever you want and at most, you are paying for gas. Con? You have to drive yourself.
 
 
Rent An Exotic Ride: You’ll probably need an adult to back the rental (financially, legally and more) Again, see the cons of “your own car” (as more than likely, you rent an exotic ride, you’re not looking for someone else to drive you).

No matter how you decide to arrive at your prom, here are a few things to consider:
  • Decide early – that way if you need to reserve a vehicle, you have some options.
  • Make sure everyone is on board with the decision
  • Get pictures – you will treasure them later in life
  • If you drive, put down the phone and put 100% concentration into driving – you owe it to yourself and fellow motorists
  • Party responsibly

VENDOR SPOTLIGHT: COATS CLASSIC CARS

Mr Burch Formal Wear has the distinct privilege to work with some of Birmingham’s best wedding vendors and venues.  We would like to take this opportunity to spotlight:  Coats Classic Cars.

From the time he was old enough to grab a steering wheel, James Coats was fascinated with cars. During high school, he worked for a retired gentlemen who restored old cars and airplanes and he was hooked.  At 16 James bought first antique car and got into the business of fixing up, buying, selling and restoring cars for others.  In 2000, the day before his 18th birthday, James drove his first wedding.  

Quickly, 10 weddings per year turned into 25, 25 into 50, and 50 into 150. James closed the restoration shop and focused on weddings.  Coats Classic Cars is now the largest vintage limousine service in the Southeast, and the only full-time, fully-professional vintage limousine service in Alabama.  They had over 150 weddings last year, plus photo displays and antique car events.

What makes you different?
There aren't many vintage car services in the United States.  Most find it difficult to insure and maintain the cars for commercial use and collectors don't want to use their cars for rental.  James is first and foremost a collector and historian who enjoys getting the cars out and sharing them with other people.  Coats is a stickler for original cars in great condition (not what you expect from a rental service).  Others may have antique-looking replicas  but Coats rents just like they would show - historically accurate. Of course it's easier to offer authentic classics when you do all the repairs and resoration work yourself.  He might be crazy for renting the caliber of car he rents, but that is what his customers have come to expect.

How should you select a rental vehicle?
 Most clients know if they want modern or an antique.  Coats refers stretch limo companies for prom and airport pickup, but they prefer to focus on weddings, special occasions and photo shoots.  "They are providing a canvas for the photographer," said Danny Brewer, owner of Feel The Beat.  These cars will still be in style 10-15 years from now.  All the cars are different.  There are 19 in the fleet spread across 3 cities, Birmingham, Huntsville and Jackson.  There are multiple styles and colors are available.  If it's authentic classic style you're looking for, Coats has it.

What are the most common mistake clients make when looking for a rental vehicle?
Ther are a couple of things the client needs to understand when hiring a car rental company.
1. The nature of what you're hiring.  You're not only paying for the performance but for the maintainence and upkeep.  That's why we charge by the package and not the hour.
2.  Research the company you're hiring.  Do they carry commercial liability insurance on all vehicles?  Other companies might not be correctly insured.  You don't want to be caught in the middle of someone else's uninsured car accident or stuck with a vintage car company that only has personal auto insurance which won't protect you in the event of an accident.
3.  Ask about the backup plan.  We have 11 cars in Birmingham but we won't rent more than 5 at a time so there is always a backup plan.  We always have a chaffeur on stand by, in tuxedo and ready to go.  We maintain our cars to a very high standard to ensure reliability, but with decades-old mechanical equipment, things can break. We rarely need the backup, but there is no room for error.
4.  Plan ahead.  Try to book  8 months ahead so you can get exactly what you want.  We can help a few weeks before but you might not get exactly the car you want.
