SHOULD YOU BUY OR RENT YOUR TUXEDO?

Most men will have the occasion to wear a tuxedo at least once in his life.  Maybe it was his high school prom or his wedding or the time you played James Bond’s for Halloween.  Buying a tuxedo when you’re still young and growing might not make financial sense, especially if you’re only going to need to wear one every few years or so.

If you're an adult, it might be time to consider if you should buy a tuxedo. The decision to buy a tuxedo should not be made lightly. After all, a tuxedo is likely to be one of the most expensive items a man will ever add to his wardrobe. When deciding if the time is right for you to buy a tuxedo, consider the following:

1. Will you need to use it at least three times in the next decade? Plan to make your tux last for a good 10 years or more. If you know you’ll need one at least three times in that period, you might be able to save money buying instead of renting.
2. Is it likely that I’ll grow significantly in the next 10 years? I would say that the mid-20s is a great time to buy a tuxedo. You’ve had your major growth spurts, you’re probably at a weight you can maintain easily, and the risk that you’ll outgrow the tuxedo is at a minimum.
3. Do I take good care of my clothes? If you’re the type of guy who doesn’t like to wash his clothes, iron, or even put them on a freaking hanger, you might still be better off renting a tux instead of buying one that will just be abused before you wear it for a second time.

HOW TO PACK FOR A DESTINATION WEDDING

Destination weddings have become increasingly popular for all types of couples.  Whether it's your first-time wedding, your're renewing your vows or getting married for the second time, if you're considering the destination decision please read on for our list of 10 helpful tips on what to bring and how to pack.

1. Carry On Essentials

If you're getting married in a wedding dress, be sure to carry it with you.  Don't trust your dress to checked luggage.  Most airplanes have coat closets and will allow travelers to hang garment bags. Check with your airline.

Grooms should also carry the clothing needed for the ceremony.  You won't find many tuxedo rental shops in the islands. It is easiest to bring clothes with you. If you're traveling to another part of the country, check out our National Fit Network program.  It allows you to find a local retailer close to you to be fitted and then pick up your tuxedo when you get to your destination.  What could be easier than that?

Don't Forget the Documentation

Make sure that all the paperwork you'll need, including birth certificates and passports, if applicable — are in your hand luggage. Don't pack these in checked luggage!

2.  Looking Your Best

Many resorts have on-site beauty salons, so you can make sure your hair is perfect for your wedding day.  If you plan to do your own hair, be sure to check first on the electrical current and plugs at your destination. You may need to bring converters for hot rollers and other appliances. Many resorts also have on-site spas which can pamper you with a massage to work out the kinks from your flight.

3.  What Goes In The Suitcase?

Make sure you have wedding dress with the special undergarments that will be used for the big day. You should also pack the right type of shoes and you should consider the conditions that prevail at the place where you are going to have your wedding.

The grooms wedding attire, shoes and address book should also be part of the important destination wedding luggage. 

If you're heading to a tropical place, please understand your feet can be puffy as a result of the weather and after the long flight.

Don't forget to pack the rings and the guest book. This will be the center of attention and you may feel embarrassed to realize that your expensive ring has been left at home.

SOCK GUIDE FOR FORMAL WEAR

Mr. Burch knows that different types of socks exist by the dozen, in a variety of fibers, cuts, colors, and patterns. This overwhelming selection of styles and colors might explain why so many men have a hard time picking socks that match what we're wearing. In addition, matching socks is often perceived as a trivial part of the whole grooming process. But the reality is improper coordination of socks can easily spoil your look, no matter how handsome and well-dressed you are.

MATCHING 101

As a general rule, you should match your socks to your shoes in order to create a flawless look from cuff to toe. It's all about ensuring a smooth transition between your pants, socks and shoes.

For example, if you're wearing beige pants with brown shoes, you should wear a pair of regular brown, light brown or dark beige socks, or even a pair of patterned socks that blends any combination of these colors. Wearing socks in shades that complement your trousers and shoes will avoid any stark contrast between them and enhance your overall look.

Note: Unless you're going to the gym or wearing white patent leather shoes with a white tux, there's no reason for you to wear white socks ever again. Following this rule alone will keep the fashion police off your tail more often than not.

FINISHING TOUCHES

How can you make your socks flow with the rest of your attire without sticking to more conservative solids?

The key is to mix up the color schemes in your socks and match them to the rest of your outfit without making a fashion blunder. You can do that by simply matching the colors in your socks' pattern to another article of clothing you're wearing.

Dressy
Match the pattern in your socks to your shirt, tie or even the pinstripes in your suit. For example, if you're wearing a black suit with a red tie and black shoes, you can wear black socks that feature a subtle red argyle pattern or polka dots. As long as the background color of your socks matches your shoes, this rule is always a safe bet.

In more formal settings, black over-the-calf stretch nylon cotton or wool socks are fitting. You should also know socks should extend over your calves any time you're wearing a tie. This prevents any part of your bare leg from being exposed while seated and puts an end to occasional tugging, which is inexcusable.

Casual
The same matching rule applies for casual attire.  Pair the colors of your socks' pattern to another part of your outfit. For example, if you're wearing classic blue jeans, black shoes and a white T-shirt, then opt for solid black socks or a black pair that features a subtle blue pattern. Remember, you can match the patterns in your socks to your top, belt or jacket, so long as the background matches your shoes.

Sporty
Finally, when it comes to athletic socks, white is fine but you can add a cool touch to your look by matching the lines or logo featured on your socks to your shorts or T-shirt. Gray socks are also a safe and stylish option for sportswear.

PROM FASHION FOR GUYS 2013

Prom season is here and every where you look there is prom fashion....for her.  What about the guy? Mr. Burch Formal Wear is here to help out. Take a look below for some of our prom tips just for him.

1.  Make sure it fits

Make sure your tux fits like it should. This means the shoulder seams should hit at the actual shoulder (and not halfway down your deltoid), the sleeves don't come past your thumbs, and you can't fit more than a fist in between the fastened jacket and your chest. As for the pants, a little break is okay; a lot of break is unacceptable.

2.  Color can be good
You're used to the classic pairing of getting a jacket and pants together, but why not try something a little different?  Adding color with your tie or socks can really add some personality and still keep that polished formal look.

3.  Don't skip the details
Is your bow tie going to have classic tapered ends, or a more modern square shape? Think about which option will look best with your lapels, and in proportion with your overall outfit.  The finishing touches matter most during formal occasions, when they're the only things separating you from the rest of the penguin pack.

4.  Should you suit up?
If you happen to have a more open-ended dress code, you might skip the formal trend and go for a suit that shows a bit more personality but is equally appropriate for the big night.

5.  Groomed the right way
You're going to have to shave.  If you want to keep some scruff, keep it cleaned up. Plan your haircut at the right time. About one week before the big day is enough lead to allow your sharply shorn 'do to settle in. You don't want to pose for pics looking like you just got out of the chair.

6.  Less is always more
Going heavy on the cologne isn't going to help you look any better, and certainly won't be fun for those closest to you all night (i.e. your date). A night like prom can be an occasion to break away from your usual scent and try something new. 

7.  Different can be good
A guy who gets his date a rose corsage is like the guy who goes to a great Italian restaurant and orders spaghetti and marinara; there's nothing wrong with it, but so many more exciting options are out there! Try an orchid or calla lily that will look unique amongst the parade of roses on the big night. Same goes for your boutonniere.

8.  Always be a gentleman
Step up to the plate and impress her by opening car doors, helping her to her seat, and standing when she gets up to go to the bathroom with six other girls. Remember that her parents and friends are going to hear a recap of every single detail about the whole evening.  What will she say about you?

THE RIGHT WAY TO WEAR A CUMMBERBUND

Research the occasion. Formal dinner parties have different dress requirements than weddings, and the rules of fashion tend to change around major holidays. Certain colors of cummerbunds are reserved for Christmas. Also, consider the time of day. If you're attending a function before five p.m., you may be required to wear morning dress. In this case, you would forgo the cummerbund for a waistcoat.

 

1. Wear a cummberbund that matches your tie. It is a style faux pas to wear a mismatching cummberbund and tie. Choose an appropriate-color cummerbund. Simple, solid colors are the most elegant and safest bet. For weddings, you can choose a color that complements your tie or handkerchief. A good rule of thumb is to wear black if you're unsure.

  

2. Wear a single-breasted jacket with your cummberbund. Single-breasted jackets are always worn with either a vest or a cummberbund, but not both. The jackets are most often worn open to show the cummberbund. Do not wear a belt if you are wearing a cummberbund.

 

 

3. Wear trousers with a high waist that will be completely covered by the cummerbund. The cummerbund provides a transition between shirt and waist. It is considered tacky to have an exposed waistband while wearing a cummerbund.

 

4. Attach the cummerbund snugly around your middle with the pleats facing up. This gives a somewhat slimming effect. The reason the pleats face up is a hold-over from late Victorian England, when gentlemen would tuck theater ticket stubs into the pleats of their cummerbunds.

Announcing the news
It’s important to consider strategy when announcing your big news.  If either of you have children already, they should be the first to know.  It might also be a good idea to tell the kids without your future spouse so they can have a chance to react privately with you first. For the rest of the family, timing is key.  You might announce the news at a family party so you can let everyone know at the same time.  If the spotlight isn’t your style, then your closest family should hear the news first. Ask them to keep it to themselves for a few days. Others may be hurt if they hear the news from someone else.

Selecting a date and guests
Parents of the bride, then groom are usually the first to be given the option of hosting an engagement party. Normally, both don’t unless they live very far from each other. The idea is that the party happens closer to the engagement than to the wedding.   Everyone invited to any pre-wedding celebration like a shower, engagement or bachelorette party, must also be invited to the wedding.   Choose wisely.  You can always invite more people to the wedding.

Having a great time
Engagement parties are one of the few events the couple doesn’t have a common American tradition to look to. They are common in some places, and unheard of in others. The good news is you have the chance to create your own style of event that will be meaningful to you. Many different styles and settings are acceptable for an engagement party like a catered dinner, casual brunch, or picnic in the park.   Just choose the type of celebration you’d most enjoy. The party itself has no requirements.  However, an announcement and toast are usually given by the father of the bride. Guests may or may not bring presents.  If you’re unsure, check with your host.  Engagement gifts are usually small, like two champagne flutes and a bottle of champagne. The goal is to celebrate your joy with a party that reflects your style.

TOP 10 TIPS FOR ATTENDING A BRIDAL SHOW

Bridal Show season is around the corner.  For those who are getting married, it can be an exciting and confusing time.  There are lots of shows to attend and so much to see.  How do you handle it all?

Bridal Show Tips 

Just like the wedding, the bridal shows will go much smoother with a little planning.  Be prepared before you attend to get the most out of each and every minute.

Top 10 tips for attending a bridal show

1. THREE IS NOT A CROWD:  Bring your fiance, parents, bridesmaids, friends and long lost relatives.  They can help you cover twice the ground and offer opinions about the choices of wedding merchants. (Note: About 30% of fiancés attend, in spite of what yours may say! Last time I checked, men liked cake samples too.)
2. GET TIME ON YOUR SIDE:  Plan to spend at least 2 hours so you can visit all the wedding vendors and see at least one fashion preview. You will regret it if you don't.  No where else will you accomplish so much in so little time.
3. STICK IT TO WIN:  Bring pre-printed address labels for prizes and giveaways.  Many vendors hold drawings for trips, prizes, and discounts.  Your labels save you from repeatedly writing your name and address.  This saves time and ink.  You can even print some of your own and include your email address.
4. DON'T FORGET YOUR WALLET:  Bring your checkbook in case you might want to book services or hold dates with a deposit. The top photographers, caterers, florists, and DJs book up quickly.
5. BRING YOUR CALENDAR:  With so much talent in one location, you are sure to find vendors you would like to schedule a one-on-one consultation with. 
6. HAVE A PLAN:  Know what you are looking for and have questions in mind. You will save time and see everything that’s important to you.
7. COMFORT MATTERS:  Wear comfortable shoes.  You will be doing a lot of walking and it's hard to concentrate on what you're doing with aching feet.
8. HAVE A BACK-UP PLAN:  If you're out of town, send a substiute to to collect information on services you need and register you for prizes. 
9. HAVE NO FEAR:  Ask questions!  The vendors are there to help you. You are under no pressure to buy from them, so find out everything you need to know.  Most of the vendors have years of experience and can give you great and practical information.
10. KNOW YOUR OPTIONS:  There are lots of shows scheduled from January - April each year.  Know what's available.  Some vendors and venues even host their own private shows.  Check it out and make a schedule.  That way you won't miss a thing.
